The goal of Sea Sun and Science (SSS) is that of introducing and exposing young people to the dynamics of environmental conservation (especially the coastal/marine environment) in an engaging and fun way. SSS targets young persons at the high school level, inclusive of those who have completed the 2nd form level up to those who have just entered University. As such, this programme is designed to take place over a 1-2 week period during the July/August vacation.
-------------------
Since its inception in 2002, Sea, Sun and Science have been a very attractive and popular vacation programme for students across Trinidad and Tobago. The programme affords participants an interactive, fun, unforgettable experience, while educating them and exposing them to different career avenues that are available in the area of Environmental Conservation.
The objectives of the programme over the years have been:
- to promote an understanding of and appreciation for coastal ecosystems and their processes;
- to develop analytical, observational and critical-thinking skills and spirit of inquiry that will encourage stewardship of coastal environments and
- to provide an unforgettable environmental experience through exposure to various activities affiliated with the environment that could influence career development.
To our delight, many former participants have chosen pursuits and careers that were in some way influenced by their two weeks of SSS. For example, the Buccoo Reef Trust has three former participants of SSS2K2 and SSS2k3 programmes currently employed with the Trust (BSc and MSc respectively) and there are many others at various institutions of Natural Resources Management (EMA, IMA, and Environment THA).
